There are some parents that are dipshits, but dipshits are institutionally guaranteed in government. It's not the governments job to raise your kids and in any case it's way outside of their capabilities.

I totally agree with the "don't make it illegal but don't make it accessible to minors" theme. Whether it's candy, sugary beverages, alcohol, social networks or games, the responsibility should lie with the parents. Yes, there are stupid parents, as there are stupid people, but the interference from the government upon those families should be well thought out and the exception, not the rule.
May I remind everyone that no one got the perfect set of parents, as they fail as much as any other person, yet (in the average case at least) the government never intervened, nor it should have. But we didn't turn out THAT bad, did we now?

I feel sad. Kids will not get away wth anything with all the tech ways to overwatch. I did alot of things to get around gaming and internet restrictions. Some the knew and didn't care and some they didn't. It will be interesting to see long term as it becomes easier to track kids every min of ever day.

Too much of ANYTHING is detrimental to a child. If your kid spends too much time playing video games they're going to have detrimental effects in other areas. In the same way that if they play a sport too much, to the extent they experience negative effects on the other aspects of their life, that's also bad. A government shouldnt restrict how long a child can play a video game anymore than they should be allowed to read books or play a sport. That's the role of the parent to determine when their kid is over indulging in anything. Video games alone are not dangerous and do not make people worse. That's the line for when a government should interfere. At objective danger to all of their citizens or citizens of a certain demographic.

Adding Floride to your water, then Chlorine to your water, then deciding Chlorine is bad. Not eating peanut butter, then needing peanut butter. Like never in history has government made a proper choice... you Linus well research and decide for yourself what you need personally. Some government agent is no more educated then the average dolt.

It's impossible to police. Any policing would cause workarounds which could have other undesirable effects. For example, in Australia we have the Internet Blacklist, no one knows what's on it, but some websites are simply inaccessible.... unless you use a VPN. Now everybody uses a VPN and the government has even less clue what's going on. This is not a big gov versus small gov argument; it would be impractical to impose time restrictions for video games for minors and would only, ultimately, create resentment towards that government (on the part of the parents) as it's clearly over-reach. Pretty much any idea China has towards the internet is a bad idea and should be viewed with skepticism until proven otherwise.

Many people will see that as a privacy infringement and more telemetry. However I am for that same concept as a third-party piece of software that can be deployed by willing parents at their own discretion.
