"Do you want a stadium across from your stadium?"

That is literally what the Texas Rangers wanted and got.

They (as in the NCAA) don't need to "pay their employees", what they need to do is "give out grants to their student-athletes", meaning, that they should not only get a scholarship, but also a monthly allowance of, let's say, 1000$, as part of their student-athlete deal. That way you can keep their status as "non-professional players", pay them enough to scrape by without making them rich, and probably have players that don't suffer from malnutrition and get kicked out of the league because they crashed at a friend's house instead of being homeless. And if they really wanted to incentivize players, they should also give the, an "additional compensation", for each year they had the grant, let's say 250 000 per year, to be paid after graduation. Or, if you lose your grant due to an injury, you still get compensated for the full year, and at least have enough to pay your medical bills. Sure, that would cost a bit, but it'd be a much fairer system, without losing all those bullshit terminologies.

The US got hooked up on slavery early, gave it up in a painful transition and has spent the next two centuries falling into bad habits trying to find an acceptable substitute.

They're both right. It is just WIERD how much Americans love their amateur kids playing amateur games and kids shouldn't be paid because the game shouldn't make billions. But it does, youtrap kids into servitude non-threatening to take their scholarahips like a slaver would. Just turn the biggest teams professional!

Fun fact; University of Kentucky has, in total, less than 300 students on their various sports teams. One coach is making 7 million dollars a year. If you dropped that to 2 million dollars you could split the 5 million remaining among 300 students and each of them would get just under 17k a year.
Oh but tell us again how you can't afford to pay them....

There is a "relatively simple" way around the problem with paying out for injury treatment etc, and that's for the colleges to get a third party insurance, which they should have anyway. It covers people getting injured on the premises, and some (types of insurance, that is) have clauses for businesses to cover for injury for people who are doing something on your behalf away from the premises. It covers volunteer work, for example. You can not tell me that it would be a financial impossibility to cover the costs of treatment and continued access to the education in this way.
I'll bet there's some sort of coverage which they don't tell anyone about, just in case someone does try to sue. They'll keep it quiet to stop anyone applying for the insurance because it'll put up their premium the next year. They have a duty of care for *anyone* on their premises or doing something for them, it's a simple fact. I'm absolutely stunned that such a litigious country hasn't got that one figured out! And if necessary, the NCAA can bloody well pay the premium as they're profiting from the work of these kids. That's something a good politician should be able to get through the houses. All parents of athletes (I'm sure that it's not just these two sports involved) or any students want to know that their kids will be treated appropriately. I can't see there being any opposition (by the public, of course there will be from the colleges and the NCAA) to there being a law forcing colleges to be fully insured. I'm sure ordinary schools already are.

While colleges “pay” players via scholarships, they should be able to earn money on the side. As long as it doesn’t interfere with school work, practices or games time, let them work their side hustle. For example, work a commercial for a local car dealership. Etc.

Hopefully it is implemented well so as not to rock the boat and make everyone hate student athletes for being "overpaid" for something that essentially amounts to a full-time job. It's sad that they've been screwed over for so long, but it would seem the tide has finally shifted. Having seen the performance of some of the "pros," it's pretty appalling that anyone could even see fit to call collegiate players "amateurs," and using that as justification for why they can't be paid, especially when their coaches make millions. One in particular, a football coach in the college town I've grown up in (who shall remain nameless), just got another raise this year, and now makes upwards of $5 million annually. And he is, at best, an amateur coach, posting consistent win-loss ratios that are 1:1 during GOOD seasons. And I have to doubt that this injustice is unique to our university.

It’s not fair that if they get injured they lose their scholarship but free tuition is a form of compensation. Also students who have scholarships in general and are on a free ride also have to fear losing their scholarship if they don’t do well in 1 class. The kid at the bookstore selling his jersey gets $10 an hour but also has to pay their tuition.
