Scotty bought the Bluetooth scan tool because of your testing of same. I agree with your synopsis. Im looking at the fancy scan tool and Harbor Freights as well. I don't need either but you can never have to many tools or a tool that you just need once for an expensive repair. I don't agree with everything you say but that's only my opinion. Enjoy your show and your passion even when you rant. Glad you beat up all products to some degree even when you beat up my love, that being Honda. Started wrenching on Honda motorcycles at 12 years old. 58 years of passion for their products and if I wasn't raised Christian or in some other faith I'd be a Hondaite! Oops already am, praise the machine unless AI turns us into the MATRIX.

I know the reliability is pretty damn good in the Toyota’s, but when I bought my 2016 Avalon hybrid limited as a CPO, I wanted to go for the extended warranty. For some, may be scammy, but for me I just like the peace of mind. I think it ended up costing me about 3 grand for The extended Toyota platinum warranty, GAP coverage, and the dealerships dumb protection plan for paint, tires, windshield, key replacement, etc. I wasn’t goanna go for it, but the easiest way to talk the guy down was to get all 3, but anyways, bought at 68,000 miles, it was relatively close to the 100,000 mile warranty on Toyota’s CPO vehicles, so now I’m covered with both bumper to bumper (which was only 12,000 miles) and the regular warranty up to 142,000 miles.
I think I really wanted the bumper to bumper since it covers a lot of the bells and whistles that comes on a fully loaded Avalon, really kinda just gives me the peace of mind. Of course if I end up having 0 problems until that mileage, I may kick myself a little. But yeah. Love the car, runs like it’s still brand new, and hope it lasts. Only problem is that even with quality tires on, it’s kinda crap in the rain, and soon I will see how it handles in the snow, I’m considering picking up a used Lexus IS 250 AWD for when the weather is crappy, hopefully to be able to get one in good condition around the 5000 dollar range, which might be tough. But even if I took a loan out, it would be pretty damn cheap. I wouldn’t be driving it all too much or hard but it would be driven enough to not just sit that I would hope it would be unlikely to deal with too much maintenance costs. But I guess you never know lol

Some of the early SAAB 93's from around year 2000 had that sludge problem too.
I have a 2005 BMW 116i that burn't about a quart of oil every 1000 miles, the manual says using that amount every 800 miles is within tolerance. It came serviced from the dealer and had only done 100,000 miles with a full history so had been looked after. The book says to change it every 16000 miles but I did it after 4000 and put in the top of the range Castrol Edge 0w 30 oil. Over 6000 miles later I've barely topped it up.
I'm about to change it again and try a decent cheaper oil that I've been using in my E46 Beemer with no problems and see how it goes. If it burns it again like mad I'll go back to the Castrol Edge (£60 just for the oil), I don't care what the manual says a relatively lowish mileage engine should not be burning a lot of oil. Everyone I speak too with the same car has the same problem but it's not happening with mine.

Hi Scotty! I'm a new subscriber. Great videos, I've been binge watching non stop. I was thinking of buying a 2019 Toyota Yaris (Indian, which is a C seg sedan). What do you think about the 1.5 ltr, VVT-i engine with a CVT? It seems a little underpowered in the low revs.

Scotty I have a 2015 Corolla L 4 speed automatic. What do you think of Toyota saying I never have to change transmission oil. Also they tell me to change the motor oil every 10,000 miles. I’m used to going every 3000-5000 miles and change the trans oil every 50,000. I am using synthetic motor oil.

Loved that car.. Lost my job and could not make the payments so it was repo, only had 5 more payment on it too. Got it with 400 miles and i put 87k after 4 years. i got it cause it was i MPG car, and with the tune, it made it more efficient I was getting 40 MPG if i drove a steady 60 mph.

I had a 1984 Toyota Hiace van with the Y2 1.8 petrol engine. It was getting on a bit, the body was rusting out and it had been broken into that many times the locks were shot and it was missing a window or two. So I decided I would kill the engine and ran it with no oil for 9 months around town. It just wouldn't die. Removing the oil drain plug nothing came out, but I could pull out this black stuff like chewing gum. It still wasn't skipping a beat, nor overheating. I gave up and put some oil in her again.

Amen! I may have posted this before (CRS) but the wife took her 2006 Prius to Toyota faithfully for service by mileage. Maybe around 60K miles the engine develops a knock, the mechanic says you only had a quart of oil. Yes, we should have been checking the dipstick, but they could have tracked oil levels and warned us to check more frequently than service intervals. Then, the hybrid batteries weren't chaeging fully. Off warranty. They installed slightly used batteries to save us some money. Then the replacements weren't charging fully either. After demanding better diagnostics, the dealer contacted Toyota "engineers" who said the engine knock (damage from low oil) tripped the knock (detonation) sensor and somehow the computer ended up not charging up the batteries fully. So our batteries weren't bad! What a charlie foxtrot on shop maintenance, diagnostics and engine design! We'll never buy or recommend another Toyota ever again!!

I owned a 2001 Lexus RX 300 and received the “letter” indicating an engine oil issue (sludge, foaming). As a former backyard mechanic from the late 50’s through the early 90’s, I found that by using good quality oil and changing it often would keep this problem at bay. Now when I found synthetic motor oil I started to use it in my Lexus RX 300 and it kept the engine internals clean. Finally traded it in 2016 with 263,000 miles, changed oil, oil filter every 5K. Extended life for most of my vehicles is due in part to the use of synthetic oil changed every 5K miles, keep I the car clean including the undercarriage. Side note: The original spark plugs lasted 175K miles when I had the dealer change them. They showed considerable wear but fuel economy was 22.5mpg over the life of the vehicle with little difference after the plugs were changed. I still keep spreadsheets for all my vehicles and have done so for many years starting in the 80’s.

My Chevy 2003 Trailblazer burns about a quart of oil in about 6,000 miles and it has 230,000 miles. Just sayin. And I change the oil on the Accord when its maintenance minder tells me too--about every 7,000 miles. And about every 8 months on the TB. The TB has a light that is supposed to tell me to change oil, but I always change its oil before that light ever comes on.
