Click clack I was taken aback. Wonderin’ ‘bout those switches of light, yeah.
Let’s find out what the point is of all that clacking, shall we?

Hey! Here are some fun links!

Through the support of people just like you, Technology Connections has become my job and I am so excited and thankful for it! 13:35 I don't agree. Arcing is a problem for mouse buttons, because it may cause the click to be detected more than once, infuriating the user. Once the clickyness of a mouse button wears out, spurious inputs start to appear.

I couldn't help but notice that you didn't cover solid state relay switches, hence the lack of a click. Perhaps a separate video on how solid state relays are different from mechanical ones?

I'm feeling really dumb now, but isn't there a way to make switches NOT click? If so, why do they always make them so they click?

This video may have cause significant damage to my light switches after extensive time playing with them and testing their switch quality.

Results: they are very clicky and I could not hold them open just a little. Of course they are push in light switches that are probably 60 plus years old...

Well... The "traditional" light switch wouldn't have clicked if you hadn't flicked it... Just move it from a position to another and you'll notice some models are silent, some other older model are clicky...

Are you absolutely sure contactors are in vacuum got better operation. That's how electron microscopes work - they remove the air so the electrons have no resistance when moving. I don't know what heavy duty contactors use as dielectric, but it's probably not vacuum. Maybe some gas or oil

I noticed once, when I used the true power button on the back of my computer that doesn't quite click, that making sure you flick it quickly makes less concerning noises, that's all I need to know.

15 minutes to explain how switches work, but switch bounce was beyond the scope of this video!
How about this....switches "click" as a result of the mechanisms used to provide a rapid opening & closing of their contacts to minimize damaging arcing that results from the changing magnetic fields inherent in inductive loads. Some switches are also designed to "click" as a means of providing user feedback. Done.
Now there's 14 minutes still available to explain switch bounce......but we can do it in 30 seconds. ...Switch bounce is the undesirable, rapid, opening & closing of the switch contacts that can occur when the switch is moved from one position to another. It has the undesirable effect of energizing/de-energizing the circuit repeatedly. This can cause some circuits to perform poorly or even introduce unwanted signals into a circuit.. Done.....with 13 minutes to sit with feet up and coffee in hand.

You forgot a “ switch” is the name of the main computer running a telephone central office.

Next, the clicks are annoying in bedrooms, so many switches in home are silent. I remember, to make really quiet switches, they would use mercury encapsulated with two electrodes. If you move capsule in the opposite direction, mercury would follow gravity and break the connection.

The innards were really tiny and surprisingly complicated. I had to take it all apart, clean the carbon off the tiny conductors then apply a bit of dielectric grease to hopefully keep them clean and working for at least as long as it was originally, I'll check back in with an update in about 25 years!

Bistable mechanisms are really, really useful.
