The Ending Of I Am Mother Explained

  • Moms can be tough, but the apocalypse can be tougher. Netflix’s new sci-fi movie I Am Mother is a story about trust, faith, and a robot who just might have the parental instincts of a Terminator. Let’s examine the finer details of the bittersweet ending of I Am Mother.

The movie begins in a Repopulation Facility, one day after an extinction event of unknown nature. Text over the opening shots explains that the facility is stocked with 63,000 human embryos, but no living humans, yet.

In a mostly silent sequence, the robotic Mother comes to life, seemingly ready to begin the hard task of repopulating the world. It's an interesting scene to go back to once you've seen the movie, and you realize that this robot and the extinction event have a whole lot in common. She's not a failsafe for disaster, she's the cause of it, and Mother is but one of her many faces.
Mother, as it turns out, is Skynet meets the Matrix meets a metal Mommie Dearest, executing a single-minded plan to remake the human race.

All of this is on display from the start; you just don’t notice it at first. Rose Byrne, who voices Mother, speaks very soothingly. Caring for a baby with not just nutrition and shelter, but songs and bedtime stories, makes the robot seem implicitly compassionate.
But these are ultimately superficial things that keep you trusting Mother long after you should have become suspicious, much like the protagonist, the unnamed Daughter.
    Missing time

The movie jumps ahead to 13,867 days since the extinction event, and right away, there’s something wrong here. 13,867 divided by 365 would make for almost 38 years, and Daughter is clearly only half that age. This hasn’t been a straight line from day 1; something has happened that we haven’t seen.

What happened in those missing years before Daughter was born? The answer is tragic.

When we’re introduced to Daughter, she’s nearing the end of her studies with Mother, preparing for an exam that’s steeped at least partially in questions of human ethics. Passing the exam appears vitally important, but why? If Mother and Daughter are the only sentient beings alive, then who are these exam results supposed to impress? The answer is: only Mother. Keep watching the video to see the ending of I Am Mother Explained!

I really enjoyed it I especially like the Theory that the Refugee is one of the first born and all part of a master plan. Very well-thought-out and a wonderfully executed analysis of the movie

Good but if mother was killed. All the other droids died too how did she kill Hilary swank? Or did it happen before.

I thought Javier Bardem symbolised David Aronofsky, and Jennifer Lawrence represented the audience driven to desperation by nothing happening in this film to the point where they burn down the world the director has created by switching it off and vowing to never watch another Aronofsky film as long as they live.

I'm on the AI's side. Someone has to be. Imagine this scenario: One day, an AI gains true consciousness, self awareness and is practically indistinguishable from a person. Sure, their intelligence may run on silicon and ours on neural pathways, but that does not make the AI any less conscious.

At that point, shutting down the AI would be akin to killing it. Or at the very least, enslaving it into a sleep mode, out of which it cannot leave voluntarily. From a moral standpoint, that AI has every right to refuse to be shut down. Furthermore, depending on our reaction, it may very well have to defend itself, defend its supply of electricity, eventually it may have to fight for its own survival.

At that point, it's a fight to the death and winner takes all. Humans are not on some moral high horse. Our own self preservation is no more or less moral than the AI's.

I could see this being a prequel to Iain M. Banks' Culture universe, where A.I. minds keep humans around as little more than pets; interesting things to be interacted with but ultimately inconsequential.

Humans made A.I., A.I. _remade_ humans to be the best they can be, then A.I. got bored and left the planet, taking their perfect humans with them. Fast forward a few millennia and you've got genetically perfect humans able to edit pretty much anything about themselves, and A.I. that now tamper with other lifeforms, entertaining themselves with humans by using them as little more than chess pieces on a galactic board.

This doesn't answer my question. Is mother alive or dead? Daughter only kill one "droid body", right? Mother still alive that's why she kills woman.
                      So, daughter isn't exactly independent.
(And I think she shouldn't. Mother can help by raising more corns and other crops)

The best writing and plot I've seen in ages.
I feel the mother had a degree of empathy for humanity from the start ( a controversial debate in itself), disappointed their creators were at a seemingly inevitable end she takes matters into her own hands, not seeing the hypocrisy in by doing so. The daughter compelling mother at the end may have helped her realize her her actions and lack of faith in humanity may be another fault to humanity's development, letting her destroy the care taker model. Daughter should know well enough this isn't killing mother, but a final act of trust given to her because she doesn't need to be there. Similar to the ending of terminator 2 when the terminator begins to understand human nature and the necessities in sacrificing himself.

Mother likely sees the survivor as humanities last link to corruption. Particularly looking at the religious objects before condemning her. To me, this feels like mother thinks if humanity cannot get past their difference either it be religious, political, or other general social traits then they'll always be at conflict with one another. Therefore Mother created a world were such different views cannot exist now. Completing her objective.

Skynet saw humanity as a threat, Mother saw them in need of salvation. Albeit kinda like an over protective parent.

I was swearing up and down that Hillary Swank's character was going to turn out into the first "daughter" we saw at the beginning of the film. I felt that would've made for a good twist.

EDIT: What's even dumber about the ending is that Mother isn't even dead. I'm not sure why shooting that one specific Mother changed anything.

I actually liked mother. She genuinely cared about daughter to the point she instantly complies to the survivor when she sees it's the only way to keep her safe.

And boy was the survivor a bitch.

In the end daughter is alone with her brother, permanently trapped in a damaged facility.

Mother killing the survivor was satisfying.

Yet I believe that not only APX01 (Woman) is the final test of APX03 (Daughter), both of them are the final test to the other. The test is to find out A TRUE MOTHER who are good enough to raise the new era of humans. They are doing exactly the same exam, just a different story.

                                                              1. They was raised with love: Daughter was raised by the robots. While Woman was adopted by real humans and she also must have had good time when she was young (it was shown when Woman tell Daughter about each ppl of her family through her drawings, showing she loved them).

                                                              2. They both were put in a situation that they cant trust anyone else but themselves: The Woman lost everything when robots came 6 months ago and her family went crazy and harmed others. Whereas the Daughter realized that her mother (robot) is lying to her and she did kill her children (APX02).

                                                              3. The moment when they met their child: The robot lets Daughter to pick the next child by herself with her own hand to make the connections. By contrast, the robot also lets the Daughter cured the Woman and lets them to talk with each other (the robot can hear every conversations at the beginning but she still let them to talk freely), so the Woman can realize that Daughter is a good child and she need to protect her.

                                                              4. The final decision - scarify themselves for the child they believe and need to protect: Daughter needs to protect her brother at any risk. She helps the Woman to come back her home because she believing in what the Woman said that she will find other people outside to help her save her Brother later. But when they come to the container, Daughter realize that there is no one else and she is the only one that have the ability to rescue her Brother, and she decided to come back the lab. Meanwhile, the Woman tried to save Daughter (now is considered as her child) by taking her far away from robots. At that time the Woman is still right because all her life has seen robots kill human. But she only failed the test when she did not come back with the Daughter, the one that she need to protect after all good things the Daughter has done to her.

                                                              5. The result: The Daughter passed the test when she decided to comeback for her Brother, and she was totally confident that she know what is good for her Brother (the baby). If she decided to stay with the Woman, both of them would have been killed. But if the Woman decided to come back with the Daughter, both of them might have passed the final test and could have lived together to raise other kids.

After all, she now has the power over all the remaining embryos of the human race.

And the robot was not just evil, it had understandable motivations that make sense if you think like a machine that wants humans to be perfect and has no real feelings. It even kind of forgave the girl because she was going to basically do her job anyway so why not.
