Free 440cc Two Stroke Engines, Will They Run??

  • Published: 06 November 2019
  • A few of our subscribers gave us TWO 440cc two stroke engines off of old snowmobiles. One is a Kawasaki 440 with a fresh rebuild off of an Arctic Cat, and the other is a Bombardier 440 that's in OK shape. Today, we get them both running for the first ever two strokes on CarsandCameras!

    Thanks for Watching!

You just entered MY world! 2 strokes are magnificent engines, some of the most genius engineering us humans ever did! I have a large collection of them, many sizes and induction systems, porting, numbers of cylinders, etc. I even have a SAAB car with a 3 cylinder, 850 cc, 68 HP, triple carb water cooled 2 stroke engine! 7 moving parts, no valves! Your twins use the same induction system to the crankcase---piston port or third port where the piston skirt acts as the valve for the charge entering the crankcase, which acts as a scavenge pump since there is no exhaust or intake stroke. I have 2 stroke diesels, one being a tiny 18 cubic inch opposed piston, twin crankshaft, crankcase scavenged with third port induction, valveless 2 stroke diesel, one of 7 ever built, and is #3! I have a rare valveless Detroit diesel, the only ones they made, the 51 series, and in 2 and 4 cylinder versions, mine is a 4, known as a 4-51. These, ad your gas engines you have, are all Day cycle engines. The more common 53, 71, 92, 110 and 149 series Detroit diesels use intake ports and exhaust valves and are valve uni-flow scavenged--air blows through the intake ports when the piston is all the way down and they are uncovered, and pushes the spent gases up and out through the open exhaust valves in the head, either 2 or 4 per cylinder, all open and close at the same time, are known as Clark cycle engines, as are the valveless uni-flow scavenged opposed piston 2 stroke diesels. Some Clark cycle gas engines have been made, too! So Day and Clark cycle, both 2 strokes, both work the same way, but use either loop scavenging or uni-flow scavenging. And 2 stroke diesels are the most efficient engines on the planet! So, welcome to MY world, once again! :-D

                                            Three notes:
1 it'll overwork your "pucker string" while riding it. (Nicotine stains fir sure)
2 the exhaust is the key to tune out for optimal performance
3 NEVER, NEVER-EVER use never cease on the clutch... build a metal shroud around clutch/ bomb ha

Marks on the bombardier piston and head are detonation marks. Usually caused by a lean condition, it either had bad gas in it, or sucked snow into the intake. It's also very likely In something of that age it probably has a bad crank seal which will make it run lean enough to detonate and burn down. Check seals for leaks before you get it stuffed into something and have to pull it back out.

The smell is so evocative of the '50s and '60s -- intoxicating!

I could here the track skipping when you hit the gas in the video where your dad drove it. A good way I've done was used two fingers and put them between the skid tale and the track and tightened the track till it was snug on my fingers
