im thinking the plug wires are canceling each other out by induction either from metal from the motor or by the wires being to close to each other or crossing each other ,maybe try to find a heavy insulated wire or a real plug wire ,it could be messing with advancing or retarding the timing ,but you got her running, that green wire is meant for ac current not for dc def nor proper for a ignition system ,by now im sure you got her going im a month late good luck with her

you have to remember back then nobody cared about climate change or the environment so metal was processed very dangeriously many gases were going to the atmosphere and metals in the drinking water so as time went on they relized safety was not common so cars became more lighter less metal and lighter plus more safety

Someone should call the starter motor cruelty prevention society. A little ether spray would help things along.

Pull the plugs and put some oil in the cylinders to help them seal and get the compression up.

Why on earth would you not just fit new plug leads before trying to start it? Someone has just used normal wire so it was never going to be easy to start

Franklins were unusual for the US in using only air-cooled engines. Even their V12 model was cooled. Another rarity was that until close to the end the chassis were wooden. Always in the luxury class, their bankruptcy after the Wall St Crash was inevitable.

was looking at the video all along and was saying to myself, stop turning this motor with such wiring for the ingnition. It turns, it fire from time to time, the valve are working. But you will ruin the starter!! then this old motor started to roars like a lion. good job!

Why not try some kind of starter fluid? that usually seems to work. is cranking something that long bad for the starter? thats what ive always heard and why people usually only crank it for 5-10 seconds at a time, not crank it till the battery is dead. how many hours do you crank it before you decide maybe i should try something different

Starting fluid is dry and will ruin cylinder walls and rings I would rather replace a starter don't have to rebuild the engine

I would try putting 3 quarts of oil in it and maybe some gas. If you strip those plug wires they will make a better ground. No need to thank me.

I have a problem with people attempting to start old vehicles, before stripping and inspecting, there could be a multitude of problems ready to manifest themselves and do possibly irreversible damage to an engine, Broken rings, loose con rod, snapped conrod, loose gudion pin, the list goes on.

Factual account: My dad had a Franklin. He took us over in it from NJ to New York City in the 1940s. A bus ploughed into our car. The front end of the bus was damaged. Not a scratch on the Franklin. What a monster. Damned thing sucked gasoline so you could watch the gauge-needle moving.

The real "running-RUN" doesn't happen. It runs out of gas - bummer.

There was an old car when I was a kid, not one of these, but similar style, when my Dad rented a garage for his car in the late 60's. The doors were open and we played inside. A big engine like a V6 or V8. I often wonder whose it was and what happened to it and why it had been left outside and open.
