I don't get this about the US. I came for an internship here, and I noticed that on foot, my commute takes me roughly 30 min, and by bus 20 min. Wtf

I'm just here for the Penny Farthing in the thumbnail....

Kidding. LOVE John Oliver. But now to the video. The Penny Farthing BETTER NOT BE A TYPICAL BICYCLE LOW BLOW trick that's so common in American media...

... and yup, it's the "weird guy riding the bicycle" joke we all know and love as Americans. Nothing says "pansy, Euro-fag like riding a bike to work!"

Good luck with that ever-increasing obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and commuting to work in never-ending traffic jambs!

10-15min by car? So buy a bike and ride your freaking bike... Unless you are driving at the speed oft light you are probably 5-10miles away froh work which after a little training is at max an hour!!! Americans have to learn that you can move yourselves in other ways than by car! In my opinion this whole Problem is just a cultural misconception on the need of a car for personal transportation

early 1980s, young and poor in dallas, texas: car lot financing for an old beater with no a/c: $45 a WEEK. look out the window one day, car is ~gone~. husband wants to call the cops. i say "call that scammy car lot first". he calls, is told they towed it off it for non-payment. husband says he has the reciept in his hand. scammy car lot argues and berates and blows off husband for awhile, then says "oh, yeah, you're right. come pick it up." husband hangs up, relieved the hoopdie we depended on for ~everything~ wasn't stolen.

i calmly ask husband how he intends to get to the other side of dallas to pick up the jalopy, and then, as he ponders this question, i not-so-calmly call scammy car lot back and tell them to put the pos car right back where they found it within the hour or i will report it stolen. beater is back in place within the hour.

ah, to be young and poor and duped. i cannot ~imagine~ how sophisticated the scams have grown since then.

                                                      Hey gang,

I recently arrived back after attending a... err.. family emergency in the year 2043. I know I'm technically supposed to keep my mouth shut about this sort of thing, but those policies haven't been enforced since the last syzygy with the third lower-odd dimension anyway.

I'm afraid I bear bad news. While on the trip, I was mostly traveling in eastern and central Alberta. Everything south of North Dakota has become an arid wasteland, devoid of almost all life. This has been pushing about a half a billion people into the upper lip of the US and into Canada. Nearly all live in titanic camps of repurposed shipping crates arranged side to side, end to end further than the eye could see. The transportation management conditions are analogous to the ones John describes in the above video, but much worse. There is barely enough crude reconstituted protein to prevent mass death from starvation, but virtually all people are significantly malnourished. There is virtually no medicine. Cholera, E.Coli, Ebola, West Nile Virus and Malaria outbreaks have wrought death tolls reported in the high tens of millions, but are likely to have taken over one hundred million victims in reality. RT is now the world's finest news source, because it is now the world's only news source. My previous go-tos, The Onion News Network and Last Week Tonight have been unable to maintain solvency. John Oliver entered vocational training and is now an emergency medical technician in the South Calgary area, you'll all be glad to hear.

Jeff Bezos, Jeff Epstein (not the clone that was executed while in custody, the real one), Bill Gates and about five hundred of the rest of the world's richest jerks now live in a private floating cuddle puddle colony in the middle of the arctic. This sounds very bleak, I know, but there IS a plan.

Current science authorities outside the rich asshole club believe that specialized mycelial networks can be used to purge the toxins from the soil in the dead zone and refertilize it. This plan could take more than three decades, but, once the soil is cured, specialized, genetically toughened tree species could be mass planted via aerial drones, and potentially begin healing the earth's atmosphere as much as thirty percent to the level of pollution present around 1925 by 2130. Work is already being done, and the rich assholes appear to be too bored taking drugs and raping underage women to care enough about interfering significantly with this large scale, global initiative.

No matter how bleak it gets, remember:

                                                      There *is* hope.

Be safe out there, guys. Let's all look out for each other.

                                                      420/69 every day,

I mean I get it - predatory lending is shitty. But how else can you get a system where a) poorer people have access to loans and b) lenders make money? If a borrower doesn't pay then that'll cost the lender money which, if that happens enough times, will force them out of business. Then no one gets loans. Are we to expect the poor to pay for the entire balance out of pocket up front? I've been in that situation. I had a 22% interest loan on a $5k car. But after 6 months I got it refinanced for (iirc) ~10% interest.

Simplest rule for those stuck with having to get a high interest loan - get the longest loan possible to keep your payments low (therefore easier to keep). You may think "but wait, I'll be paying way more by the time it's paid off". Yes. Which is why you have to refinance at 6 months - year. The new loan interest will be much lower. Go through a reputable credit union. They'll usually treat you the best.

People are idiots, that's why they sign 26% apr loans. They don't read, calculate, or think about anything but the monthly payments. Car dealers take advantage of their ignorance. Who can blame them?

This exact thing happened to a friend in 2018. She was a little younger than me, and needed a car to work. She went to a buy here/pay here dealer, and ended up signing on a 2003 Mazda protege that had 130000+ miles on it. The ticket price on the vehicle was 6900, and the they slapped on an interest rate of 28%, bringing the overall total to 10200 after the car was paid off. I was pretty upset to hear all of this had transpired, but wait. She missed one payment because she was at a marine recruiters office longer than she expected, and couldn’t make it to the dealer in time. They repossessed the vehicle from that lot. I decided to step in, having slightly more experience in a conversation, just as an advocate for her to ask questions that she might not think to ask. The person responsible for clearing the repossession was not in, but they said they would call her and she would come to talk with her. An hour later we asked again and she said she wouldn’t be in that day. After insisting that she come, she arrived, accused me of being official legal representation, and stated that she felt intimidated by my presence. I managed to ask a few questions and discovered some disturbing information that I later confirmed with an attorney friend. First, they stated that they would give her the car back if she would pay two months of payments, ($600) as well as the “after hours towing fee” of $800. She then said that if this wasn’t met in 30 days from receiving the notice, she would sell the car at auction. She then said that in South Carolina, and this is true, she was legally able to pursue my friend for whatever the disparity was between the sale price at auction, and whatever my friend had left to pay on the car; I guarantee that they weren’t going to get 10,000 for it, KBB said that in its condition was worth 2300.

Happyish ending considering, a guest at our job found out, paid off the remaining balance of her car, and just asked that she pay back the principle, which she was more than happy to do.
